Learning to find water on my own... When I was 18, my dad moved up to a larger 350 v Ranger and literally gave his 16' 158v Ranger with the 85 hp Johnson motor to me! I was very fortunate to be trusted with a piece of equipment (actually a trophy!) that was worth so much. However, with this entrusting, along came the responsibility of ownership. For the first time, I had the opportunity to explore a lot of new fishing new territory on my own. And like a babe in the woods, I soon lost the forest for the trees... I developed a bad habit of wanting to see and fish the entire lake in a short period of time... And by failing to concentrate on the fish when I found them, I lost out on many fine opportunities for good stringers of fish... It took awhile...but I found that I did better by camping out in areas where I knew there were fish and working these areas over and over again. To this day, I still love to cover water and see what I can see. There is nothing more refreshing than waking up on a slightly foggy morning and making a run down a river or new stretch of lake that I haven't seen before. I think that part of the fishing experience that has been so enjoyable for me is that part that allows me the freedom to search for that new fishing hole...that new pattern...that lies around the bend somewhere. I have been extremely lucky in that I have had an amazing opportunity to see a lot of water. Living in Indiana, I have had the opportunity to see what Indiana has to offer in fishing opportunities. Although the Hoosier state has some good fishing spots, I often find myself out of state exploring the many miles that other state's lakes and rivers have to offer. |
