Ohio River...For some reason, rivers just don't seem to get the respect that many lakes get. However, some of the best fishing can be found in these waterways that continue to roll on... I have always been a huge fan of fishing rivers. When I was very young, I'd often take my bike and go down behind my great Grandma Sadie's and fish the Wabash river at the mouth of a small creek in Vincennes for catfish. I would always stop and chat with my Grandma first. She often spoiled me with a breadsack of egg sandwiches or a breadsack of fried chicken and homemade bread. Those were the days... There is something romantic about a river that tends to lure young fishermen to its edge. Maybe it is the way the river slowly rolled downstream....or the beauty of the landscape's reflection in the river. Perhaps it is just the unknown that lies beneath the vast waters that rolls slowly along... When I started travelling with my dad, I had the opportunity to learn about the great Ohio River and it's tributaries around southern Indiana and northern Kentucky. I had a lot of success in tournaments on the Ohio River too. I won my first major fishing tournamant (Indiana Bass Federation Invitational) on the Ohio River at Cloverport, Kentucky fishing with a gentleman by the name of Chuck Shots. That morning, my partner and I went back to a spot in little Deer creek and I managed to catch 5 fish on a single spin white/chartreuse spinnerbait. Each fish came about an hour apart... With time running short in the tournament, I suggested that we try another of my dad's favorite spots in Clover creek before we went to the weigh-in. We fished the bank for 15 to 20 minutes and my partner told me I had time for one last cast... So I flipped my jig and lizard beside a log and pulled out a nice 3 pound largemouth! A limit of fish anywhere is always something to feel good about. But this was one day I will always remember as I weighed in the only limit of fish that day and got my first major tournament win... Amazingly enough, I believe I had 8 or 9 2nd place finishes on the Ohio river in Indiana Bass Federation and Operation Bass/Red Man events before I got another major tournament win on the Ohio river. A lot of people may lead you to believe that fishing tournaments are a win or lose thing...that second place means your a loser. Let me tell you what folks...I always walked away a winner...first place, second place, fourth place, big bass...whatever... You don't have to win the tournament to be a winner...ya just have to feel good about yourself after the event... I was a winner anytime I got to fish the Ohio River...

This is a nice 2 3/4 pounder bass caught on the Ohio River-Galconda.
Here is a clipping from a fishing tournament where I finished in 2nd place...by one ounce... and lost big fish by one ounce...when I was 20 years old.
Here is a 2nd place plague and a plaque for catching the biggest bass of the tournament when I was 20 years old. I was fortunate enough to win several big bass awards while I was fishing tournaments. Most of the big fish were between 5 and 6 pounds...
