Table of Contents Learning to find water on my own Information on the 99' fishkill on the White River Have fun...but don't get your feet wet!
My mom, Bonnie Cooper, is an excellent fisherman. In 1999, during a trip at West Boggs and very late in the day, she had caught about 9 more fish than me...Being the ever-so-persistent fisherman that I am, I eventually moved to another spot where I eventually passed her.

Family fun at West Boggs...In the year 2000, the best lake in Indiana award (public lake that is) easily goes to West Boggs Lake in Loogootee, Indiana. You will see me there a lot this year! This lake is loaded with bass and many people are catching more than one hundred fish a day on the water... Most of the bass are running between 12 and 16 inches with the average fish around 13 1/2 inches. West Boggs is a fertile lake and can support a good population of largemouth. However, unless some of the bass are removed from this lake soon, the bass in this lake will not have enough food to eat and the fishermen will see a severe decline in the growth of these bass... In 1999, the fishing was excellent all the way through June. If you have a pattern that you would like to learn better, this is a perfect lake to work on it...as almost every pattern will work. I caught fish from 1 feet to 30 feet on a wide variety of lures - worms, jigs, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, and topwater baits! Back in 1981, I remember fishing a team tournament with Danny Bluebaum (one of my fishing buddies back then) and, of course, a cold front had moved in and the fishing was extremely slow. It seemed like the fish were refusing to cooperate wherever we went... With two hours left in the tournament, we ventured to a new area (where I had caught some bass on a buzzbait and spinnerbait when I was a young teen) and I immediately missed a nice 5 pounder who tossed the leech-type worm right back at me. Making a smart move, I put down my short 5' 6" sturdy worming rod and picked up my 7' 6" flipping stick and proceeded to quickly put 5 nice keeper bass in the boat... Had we found the pattern earlier in the day or had I landed that 5 pounder...the tournament would have been ours. But, we finished 2nd and I got my first taste of tournament success at the ripe age of 16... West Boggs is a very family-friendly lake. There are excellent picnicking facilities all around the lake. The beach has a nice place to swim and there is a great golf course nearby. The campground (near the water) is always well-maintained. The West Boggs area is surrounded by gently sloping hills and it is not unusual to see an Amish horse and buggy go by while one is fishing... The area also features many antique shops and has some of the best and inexpensive home-cooking restaurants in the state. Is it no wonder that I find my way down there so often?

Fishing and enjoying the outdoors is all about fun! Part of that fun is opening up the big motor and letting the wind blow back your hair!
